Does anyone know what it means to be a Libertarian?

I thought I was a Liberal but the definition of Liberal is generous and Libertarian seems to have something to do with Liberty. Please explain...

You can plot your own political identity, and see how the two compare, here:

Long ago, a Liberal was someone who believed in small government, free trade, and property rights. (They are sometimes called "Classical Liberals"). However, today's Liberals are essentially opposed to these things. When socialism and fascism came to America during the "Progressive Era" and the "New Deal", these new statists co-opted the term "Liberal" to disguise their destructive policies.

Libertarians are for individual liberty and against statism.

The far right of Libertarianism would be Anarchists.

The far left would support strict adherence and interpretation of the original Constitutional framer's intent and nothing more.

Both have to do with liberty. But libertarians typically don't want any government to say, "Hey Exxon, it's not ok for you to dump your waste in the Mississippi River," while liberals think its a good thing to monitor stuff like that.
