You have 2 problems. 1. You are assuming that just copying a file will make it work on a standard DVD player... It WON'T! 2. MKV files are particularly strange. Most DVD players will only play DVDs, and DVDs are formatted in a certain way, and have specific formats of files (videos, menus, region code, etc). If it is not this specific format, it will fail. Fortunately, there are many, many DVD authoring programs out there, and probably some for free. If you create a DVD in this program, it will convert the files and write them on the disc correctly. Your other problem is that of the MKV. MKV (Matroska Video) is a clever format that creates insanely high quality video. But it is very different to the .mpg and .avi files that these programs convert. You will probably have to get another program to convert the MKV, and these programs are few and far between.

I think you had burned your mkv file on dvd disc as data disc, most regular DVD player can't recognize the data DVD(directly write video file on disc), regular DVD player only recognize standard video DVD which include VOB, IFO, and BUP files, so you should use the right software to burn standard video DVD from your mkv files, there is an easy way, you can try RZ DVD Creator, works well, it can directly convert/burn any movie files to standard video DVD, and can play well on regular DVD player, such as mkv to dvd ,etc. Maybe you can have a try!
You can yahoo or google search and download the RZ DVD Creator, easy to use, most functionality, hope it can help you.

You need to burn the DVDs as Video DVDs, not Data DVDs. Therefore you need to convert the video format from mkv files to DV (with the audio/video file structure that DVD use - Audio TS and Video TS folders etc).
Somebody may have better info for the best software to use for this... but that's the reason they're not playing back.

DVD format is VOB, you have to convert your video to DVD compatible video at first, otherwise regular DVD player can not read and play it. If you don't know how to burn a playable DVD, I think this DVD Creator would help you a lot. I always use it to convert and burn movie to DVD to play on my home TV, it's easy to use and works pretty well, if you are interested in it, here is a step by step guide about how to use it.
