You have 2 problems. 1. You are assuming that just copying a file will make it work on a standard DVD player... It WON'T! 2. MKV files are particularly strange. Most DVD players will only play DVDs, and DVDs are formatted in a certain way, and have specific formats of files (videos, menus, region code, etc). If it is not this specific format, it will fail. You need to burn the DVDs as Video DVDs, not Data DVDs. Therefore you need to convert the video format from mkv files to DV (with the audio/video file structure that DVD use - Audio TS and Video TS folders etc).

Somebody may have better info for the best software to use for this... but that's the reason they're not playing back.

DVD format is VOB, you have to convert your video to DVD compatible video at first, otherwise regular DVD player can not read and play it.
