My dog has a cold sore.?

She has had a dry, crusty inflammation in the corner of her mouth that causes the mucous membranes to "pooch" out, dry and crack. She's had it for several weeks now. Can I treat it with OTC herpes/cold sore unguent for humans?

You can give Lysine (it's at the grocery store in the vitamin section), a 500mg dose for a dog will work. It's an amino acid, it helps human cold sores too. It's safe, won't interfer with any other medication, and works pretty good.

Phone your vet and confirm this, of course, but it's used on FIV cats with the herpes simplex virus in their system (mainly it causes runny eyes in cats), and it works on human cold sores, which is a variation of the same virus.

Nekkid Truth canine herpes is real. Actually most dogs carry the virus, but as in humans, it lies dormant in most dogs. It can cause respiratory issues and can pop up as a sore very similar to those on humans(cold sores). In breeding dogs it can cause loss of puppy or puppies in litters, however this does not mean the dog should not be used for breeding because, as I mentioned previously, most dogs have the virus any and it mostly is dormant. If the virus is active or aggressive the problems will pop up.

is your dog rubbing the muzzle? You should take your dog in to a vet to be examined they do not get cold sores, they can get herpes http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2102&a... rule of thumb if no improvement after a week go to the vet.

NO! Talk to your vet. It could be a symptom of some other underlying problem. It could be a tumor. You need to get it checked ASAP!
