Poor Research Skills Among Teens?

I didn't have the internet at my fingertips 20 years ago when I was in HS and when I wanted to find out something about some place I looked it up in periodicals or found promotional literature about an event, activity, or happening by going to, or calling the tourism center for the area I was inquiring about. With technology what it is and with kids as (supposedly) savvy as they are with computers, I would think your average 15 year old should be able to use a search engine with some moderate degree of aptitude. From what I see on Y! Answers, it appears most kids lack research skills. What are some of the reasons behind this? Have the schools stopped teaching kids how to do research?

I don't believe proper researching skills are taught at the HS level or at least not taught properly. Teachers are more likely to just give the assignment and deal with failure at a later date instead of being proactive and leading the way for their students.

It is only now many years later, after being an instuctor and currently a resident expert that I believe my research skills are at a high level.

You are judging the cake by the wax paper underneath it. The kids asking the questions are the few who want someone else to think for them, work for them and if I had my way, I'd get the A instead of them. The average kid in an academic high school is busy working on papers and projects while the few are sitting here trying to scam their way through life ... and it is even a small minority of the kids here. Many of the kids here are asking astute questions, important questions and questions that affect the quality of their lives.

The world had knuckleheads even back when I went to school and we dipped a pen into an inkwell before we wrote. Even ball point pens had not yet been invented. Back then, we used to call them giraffes. They stretched their necks to read the papers of the bright kids and tried to copy their work. They still managed to fail.

I had teens in my writing classes who I would put up against many professionals for their ability to use powerful language and their willingness to research to attain verisimilitude.
