  • When Expressing Heat or Volume Generation, Why Use Negative Exponents Instead of Using a Denominator?

When expressing heat in J/g, why is it written as Jg^-1 instead of the J/g. Also, it is the same for expressing volume of gas generated cm^3g^-1 instead of Cm^3/g.

Is there a reason for that other than not having a denominator?

Lastly if you can explain QV (heat per unit volume) and how it relates to this, it would be appreciated.

    Thank you

  • Higgs Boson Subatomic?

    Reference this article. http://news.yahoo.com/higgs-boson-particle-may-spe...

And more specific this paragraph from the article. "For example, the mass of the new particle is about 126 billion electron volts, or about 126 times the mass of the proton".

How this be a subatomic particle if its mass is greater than a proton?

  • Is 280 000 Km/175 000 mi Too Much Mileage for a 2003 Nissan Altima?

The car sounds normal, handles well, and is responsive without slippage. Also, it is very clean, with no rust, and appears to have been taken care of. At a glance without knowing the year, it would be difficult to guess that it was that old. The only thing that concerns is the mileage. The main reason I want it is because I can pay cash, and I think if I get another 50 000km then it's worth it, if I get another 100K it's even better. Thanks.

  • What Texas Hold'em Tournament Style Do You Prefer?

I am playing a tournament this weekend and haven't played a live tourney in quite some time. Play a little online, but current experience is certainly lacking, and looking for opinion/advice.

The tourney will be 200 persons, top 20 get paid, 10K (tourney money) in chips to start, with 30 min blinds starting at 25/50 (no ante throughout). In total, tourney should take about 8 hours.

The 3 basic strategies I am aware of are:

    1. Aggressive from start. i.e. go big or go home

    2. Tight i.e. drag it out and see as many hands as possible

    3. My personal fave. Daniel Negreanu style. Loose at beginning when pots are small, unpredictable, aggressive, and smart.

I think aggressive is necessary if you want to win a tourney, but for relatively small tourneys like this I could see playing tight possibly working also.

    Thoughts?

  • How do historians relate dates for different civilizations?

All civilizations have had different concepts of time, and B.C/A.D. haven't always existed. Historians use B.C./A.D. for a reference point in time, but no other civilizations other than Christian would have used this. How do historians know how far before or after Christ other civilization's events happened? i.e. the Trojan war happened about 1250 BC, Persian wars 500 BC, Alexander 300 BC.

  • Is Accuracy Scalable for a MEMS Gyrocompass?

The Microelectromechanical System (MEMS) gyro-compass that is found in smart phones can achieve an accuracy of about 2 degrees when finding true north. It is a tiny vibrating tuning fork like instrument that detects the 2 forces that the earth exerts (gravity and centrifugal).

For this example we'll say that it is 10mm in length. Is it scalable? i.e. if it was 20mm long would it be twice as accurate (1 deg)?

    Thanks

  • What is the Difference between Accuracy, Consistency and Precision?

A discussion has come up with my colleagues between Accuracy, Consistency and Precision. I realize Accuracy and Precision are synonymous in dictionaries, and I realize this may be semantics for some; but when defining capabilities of an instrument, room for error exists when definitions are misunderstood. I figured I'd post here to see what people have to say.

Originally, I always heard it as just Accuracy and Consistency, but now Precision has entered the discussion. I understand that consistency is the ability to do the same thing repeatedly with very little variance, even though it may not be accurate. I also understand that something may be accurate, but with a large variance that makes it inconsistent. Where does precision enter the discussion?

Does precision replace consistency, or accuracy; or do all three have their own value?

    Thanks

  • How do Fibre Optic Gyroscopes Determine Geographic North?

I understand that 2 beams/waves of coherent light are injected into the fibre optic coil in opposite directions, and that the coil is spinning at a specific rate and forces one of the waves to travel a further distance; and upon return the waves will be incoherent and out of phase. I also understand that interferometry is used to measure this difference in phase, but after all the reading that I have done, I have not found an explanation of how this relates to finding north. I am attempting to write a paper in layman's terms for the masses of my workplace and am having some difficulty. Can anyone explain it to me in layman's terms?

  • Holdem tournaments and all-ins.?

Just speaking on the unfortunate situation of having to go all-in a few times in a tourney and making the assumption that you are getting your money in good. Are overall odds of winning these hands dependent?

Example: if you had go all-in three times in a row with a 70% hand. Your odds would .7*.7*.7= 34% overall. What if the 3rd time is a few hours later? I understand that each hand is independent, but are your overall tournament odds reduced to 34% never to get higher?

I understand tournaments are low probability to start with and that good play influences this; I am just looking for some insight. Thx.

  • Does gravity change as you move closer to the poles?

I am doing research on gyro-compasses that can attain an accuracy = 1/100 of a degree. I understand that they take their measurements by resisting the force of rotation of the earth. I also understand that the rotation of the earth at the equator is faster than the latitudes that are closer to the poles.

The specific type of gyro I am researching is the wire suspended gyro where gravity is also part of the equation.

  • Should NATO directly support Libyan Rebels?

I understand the quick answer that most will give is that, NATO has already been supporting Libyan Rebels. However, I do not believe it is that simple. NATO is enforcing UN resolution 1970 and 1973; and Libyan Rebels are not a recognized government. Therefore, NATO is technically not directly supporting or allied with the Rebels. If one could elaborate and/or provide links that would reinforce any premise for either side of this question, it would be much appreciated. Perhaps past wars where NATO and rebel forces were involved may answer my question as well.

This is for a small argument paper that I am writing and I need premises for both sides of the argument. My stance is no.

  • How many pitches did Nolan Ryan throw in his professional career? Does he have the record? If not, who does?

I know the answer is out there. Just don't know where to find it. Hoping some extreme stat buff will be able to answer this. I have wondered about this question for many years.
