What would you do in the San Diego area?

I will be in San Diego at the end of January for about a week and am looking for fun stuff to do. I will also have the ability to go to L.A. if necessary. I am a 40 yr old male and am up for pretty much up for anything. I enjoy food, music, sports or whatever.

Update:

Where's the best place for fish tacos?

If you want good fish tacos, go closer to the border - look for somewhere in National City (just try not to get shot). Otherwise, you can go where all the other tourists go, to Old Town. Try Old Town Mexican Cafe (OTMC) - it's a good place to start if you're from out of town.

No real sports going on this time of year. Most of your fun is going to be had downtown in the Gaslamp District. You can go bar-hopping or just eat at some restaurants. Most everything is on 4th and 5th avenue. If you had to give a cab driver an intersection to drop you off at, I'd say 5th and Market. Walk from there - just see what you can. There's nothing North of Broadway and don't walk west of 11th unless you know where you're going.

If you like tourist activities, you can check out the Midway, our permanently stationed Naval Ship that can be toured. You can also catch a ferry over to Coronado. Check out the Hotel Del Coronado, one of the most famous hotels and an area landmark. All of these are close to downtown.

You could also go to La Jolla. That's about 20 minutes North of downtown, off of Interstate 5. La Jolla Cove is a nice place to visit. Lots of restaurants within walking distance from there. There are several little beach towns as you go up the coast in North San Diego County, funky/eclectic places like Leucadia & Encinitas, etc... Del Mar is also nice.

San Diego has fantastic beer and you can do tastings at many of the places. Good ones to check out: Green Flash, Alesmith, Ballast Point, Coronado Brewing, Karl Strauss (Downtown).

Point Loma/Cabrillo National Monument. The whale watching and tidepools should be going strong in a couple of weeks still.

Balboa Park. Always love going there, even just to walk around outside. There are several free sections such as the rose garden, the botanical gardens.

Pacific Beach has a great party scene and a nice beach.

La Jolla Cove for seal watching and just enjoying the weather. You could also check out the sea caves provided the tide is low.

San Diego Zoo and Sea World could also be on the list.

    Tons to do, really.
