Should NATO directly support Libyan Rebels?

I understand the quick answer that most will give is that, NATO has already been supporting Libyan Rebels. However, I do not believe it is that simple. NATO is enforcing UN resolution 1970 and 1973; and Libyan Rebels are not a recognized government. Therefore, NATO is technically not directly supporting or allied with the Rebels. If one could elaborate and/or provide links that would reinforce any premise for either side of this question, it would be much appreciated. Perhaps past wars where NATO and rebel forces were involved may answer my question as well.

This is for a small argument paper that I am writing and I need premises for both sides of the argument. My stance is no.

Update:

For more clarification, I believe the beginning of the NATO campaign, NATO was careful to stay within the UN resolutions and operate separate from the Rebels. Since then the situation has morphed into a what would be perceived as support (striking select targets, intel sharing etc.). I still cannot find any official statement that eludes to NATO's partnership or alliance with the Rebels. In my mind, these are very careful political stances where NATO will not be responsible for any Rebel wrong doings, even if it was NATO that enabled them to do so.

When u say technically it means you are trying too hard... The USA IS supporting the rebels end of story. So if you want do a research on something else. Like what stance should USA take with Egypt. Much more interesting and important topic.

Simple, my friend. This moment is a good moment for the American politicians to "wipe out" Qaddafi. You know who Qaddafi is to them, don't you? He is a great US oil business blocker. The US has not bother with whatever Qaddafi has done in his country for decades because it is difficult for the US to harm Libya's sovereignty without good reason. My simple logic says that this is a good moment for the US "to fish in turbid water".

NATO is the arm of western imperialism. Western imperialism is utterly lawless.

The U.S needs to pull out of NATO. It's a mob-rule way to **** up other countries.
