NO. People who say that it does do not understand the technology - or are just deluding themselves because they're seduced by the meaningles term "full HD".

ALL new tv sets except those with built in Freesat receivers are HD Ready. All it means is that the set must have an external HD source such as a Blu-ray player.

The televison set cannot show information that is not present on the disc. If the film was recorded using 1080p then the tv set will show it in 1080p.

If it was recorded on the disc in 720p you will not be able to "upgrade" this to 1080p because the additional lines information is not there. You may notice a slight smoothing of some sharp edges because of some "line-duplication" on a large set, but I doubt if 37" is big enough to make that relevant.

There are no 1080p pictures transmitted by public broadcasters (Sky or Freeview). They are either 720p or 1080i. This is for technical and cost reasons.

The Panasonic tv will detect the type of signal coming in through the HDMI port and adjust itself automatically to get the best match.

It is fairly unlikely that you will see a difference. It is quite difficult for the human eye to tell the difference between 720i & the full 1080p hd format. I have a PS3 & a full 1080p TV & the picture is excellent. I have a friend that has a PS3 & a HD ready TV & to be honest the picture quality is excellent. However I have a friend that has a full HD1080p tv & the picture quality is not great for the spec. Quite simply the TV he brought was cheap albeit 1080p & it does not do what is is suppose to do very well. He was gutted.

Ther are quite a few factors that can determin how good the picture is other than the screen resolution. Like how well does the TV display "black". Just how good are the electronics feeding the picture to the screen.

You will notice a difference like night and day,and depending on your contrast ratio you will get a very great picture the higher the contrast ratio rating(e.g. 20,000 ;1 or 50,000;1-these are contrast ratings you see on sticker or box for TV and the booklet tells you also) for your TV the brighter colors will be more brilliant and the darker colors will be more dark and not look milky gray looking. And be sure that you are using a decent HDMI(make sure it is rated a 1.3 or greater) cable so you can get the best picture possible.
