There are multiple forms of macular degeneration.. Most commonly people call them as wet and dry. In the dry form of macular degeneration there is a build up of waste product in the macular region that causes damage and a decrease in vision. In the "wet" form, there is a growth of new blood vessels in the region that has bursted causing there to be a separation of different layers of the macula. It can even happen overnight. The trauma to the head would be a separate thing from the macular degeneration. With the wet form of the disease, it can progress quite quickly so it's possible your mother was ok before. It should be noted, that unlike what the previous poster said. there is different therapies out there that is being used to treat the eye. The most common one currently is to use anti VEGF injections that cause there to be a regression of the vessels. Common names for them include Lucentis and Avastin. With these injections there are a number of people that can get some improvement in their vision but there is no guarantee with this. But it is currently the most effective way to treat the wet form of macular degeneration. It is very important that she keeps up with her follow up examinations. As having the disease significantly increases the chance of it occuring in the other eye. The doctor should have given her something called an Amsler grid to monitor for any changes in her vision.

It sounds like she has wet macular degeneration. It's the faster progressing and more severe type of MD. Unfortunately, there is no treatment yet. Wet macular degeneration only accounts for 10% of all MD cases. Good luck for you and your mommy. :)
