Now .. What do you think about this ?? It's serious ..?

Many Americans believe the 21st century will belong to the Chinese. I am not bullshitting, it's on the news (San Francisco Chronicle). And I believe so too - so my question is, should the non-Chinese parents start thinking about letting their child learn Chinese? I mean, afterall learning a second language(other than English) will only benefit the child, no harm. What do you think? If you go out there right now, about 95% of Asians between the age of 10-40 speak at least 2 languages ( English and Chinese/cantonese). How about the non-Asians ?? If you can find a non Asians that can speak Chinese, consider it really rare! Do you feel ashame learning Chinese?

Update:

I just think it will only benefit the child - sorry if you don't agree - afterall, I am entitled to shout out my own thoughts right?

Yes definitely. Chinese should be an option in public schools. People will have to get used to it, just like the world had to get used to the British Empire's reign with the English language and then a continuation of that English language dominance with the rise of the United States in the 19th century.

This is old news. Pre schools have been teaching tots Mandarin for quite awhile now. While the focus was on the outrage on having children learn Spanish was going on. The Chinese snuck in the back door and set up house. Not that multi linguistics is a bad thing. After all it makes it easier to function in an ever shrinking world. But when someone doesn't think you know what they are saying they tend to say more than they want you to know.

That's all I got. Have a nice day.

1] most people don't bother to learn a language unless it is absolutely essential.

2] depends a lot on the education system you are in.

3] your socio-economic background sets some values...some families put importance on learning different languages others don't

4] Chinese is not an easy language to learn for the average person. if it had similar alphabets and concepts as Indo-European languages more people may try.

5] in the past twenty years learning Chinese has increased due to business.

but really...the main difference is all about attitude and perception. there must be a reason why learning second or third languages are more important in some cultures and not in others.
