Should i grow a beard?

Im thinking of shaving my head and growing a beard. It will fulfill the sunnah and make me recognizable as a muslim instantly like a women wearing a hijab.

However im only 20 and it would make me look old. Im scared it will affect my job opportunities and ive heard once its grown you cannot shave it off.

Do you think i should grow it?

Alykum asalaam wa ramatollhi wa barakatuhu brother!

    "i'm only 20"

It is known, that the one who spends his youth in servitude to Allah, will be rewarded highly, and also be amongst the 7 to be in Allah’s shade on the day where there will be no shade.

"There are seven whom Allah will shade in His Shade on the Day when there is no shade except His Shade: a just ruler; A YOUTH WHO GREW UP IN THE WORSHIP OF ALLAH, THE MIGHTY AND MAJESTIC; a man whose heart is attached to the mosques; two men who love each other for Allah's sake, meeting for that and parting upon that; a man who is called by a woman of beauty and position (for illegal intercourse), but be says: 'I fear Allah', a man who gives in charity and hides it, such that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives in charity; and a man who remembered Allah in private and so his eyes shed tears.'" (Abu Hurairah & collected in Saheeh al-Bukhari (English trans.) vol.1, p.356, no.629 & Saheeh Muslim (English trans.) vol.2, p.493, no.2248)

'A youth who grew up in the worship of Allah'

The great scholar, Ayyoob as-Sakhtiyaanee (d.131H) said, "From the success of a youth is that Allah guides him to a scholar of the Sunnah.(Hasan - Reported in Sharh Usoolis-Sunnah of al-Laalikaa'ee no.30).

Indeed, it is a great blessing from Allah for a youth to be guided towards worship and be befriended by the righteous, since it is in youth that a person is most vulnerable to the temptations of life and liable to drift away from the Islamic Path. This becomes apparent when we look at society around us and we see that most of the worldly distractions, such as music, games, clubs, fashion etc. are all specifically targeted at the young. "You're only young once!" they are told, which is why many Muslims nowadays waste their youth thinking that they will pray, wear Hijaab and go to Hajj, etc. when they are old, as if they have a guarantee of longevity from Allah! How well we would do to heed the Prophet's advice when he said: 'Take benefit of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before you are preoccupied and your life before your death.' Sahih - Narrated by Ibn Abbaas & collected in al-Haakim & others. Authenticated by Shaikh 'Alee ibn 'Abdul Hameed in Forty Hadith of the Call and the Caller. http://www.islamicfinder.org/articles/article.php?...

it should only be for pleasing Allah Subhanhu wa Ta'ala..who cares what people think right? Allah's (Subhanhu wa Ta'ala) Judgement is the only one that matters. and tomorrow is not guaranteed.

    "job opportunities"

with or w/o the beard, Allah is in charge of everything so he will give you job if He wants or not if He wills...and if one job closes for you, it may be becase Allah Subhanhu wa Ta'ala will show you another better one !! Subhan Allah. Allah Subhanh wa Ta'ala does not abandon His slaves which turn to Him and obey Him. even if you suffer/struggle, you get extra hasanat [reward] Insha'Allah!!! this could be a test

make dua for strength, and wear it Insha'Allah

i fully support you brother! it's wonderful to follow the sunnah, live life like Prophet Muhammad (Sal Allahu Alayhi wa Salaam). i think you should grow it. but more importantly, you should because the Prophet (Sal Allahu Alayhi wa Salaam) did, and to obey Him is like obeying Allah Subhanhu wa Ta'ala...Insha'Allah

    best wishes

    Jazaka'Allah Firdaus

    Allah Hafiz

    peacee

Yes Insha'Allah!! It is Allah (swt) who has decreed whether you will get a job or not, so don't think that way!! And you won't look old!! You'll resemble, Muhammad, Eisa, Musa, Ibrahim and the Prophets peace be upon them all!

My opinion is: What's stopping you? It's Sunnah! Go for it :)

If you're on Facebook, search 'Sunnah Beards'. It's an active group and there's plenty of Brother's in the group who could help you with any queries you might have.

    Salam!

You probably don't want a female to answer but, My husband is 36 and has a moustache and small beard (not really a goatee) and has never been able to grow hair on his cheeks. I've known him since he was 19 and its never changed. But he looks great with what he has.

I don't know why you think shaving your head and growing your beard will make you recognizable as a Muslim.

You can shave off your beard once it is grown, it will grow back, again and again, it will grow back.

    Praise be to Allaah.

    Firstly:

The command to let the beard grow is narrated in many saheeh ahaadeeth which were narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), which indicates that it is obligatory to let the beard grow and it is haraam to shave it. See question no. 1189.

    Secondly:

It is part of the tolerant nature of Islam that it permits one to do something that is haraam and to omit obligatory duties if there is a valid excuse for doing so, as in cases of necessity and urgent need – such as eating dead meat when forced to do so, or a woman being treating a male doctor when necessary. The matter is subject to shar’i guidelines and should not go any further than is necessary.

    Thirdly:

The Muslim must strive to meet his needs without committing haraam actions as much as possible. If he cannot do that except by committing a haraam action, it is permissible for him to do it in that case.

Based on the above, you should strive to do the following:

1 – Look for a gas mask that can be worn with a beard. Some companies have made gas masks for religiously-committed Jews with beards who work for airline companies.

2 – Look for another job which does not require you to commit any haraam actions, even if that job is in another country.

3 – Try to create your own work by doing business and the like.

If you cannot do any of these things, then there is no sin on you, in sha Allaah, if you shave your beard, so long as you shorten it only as much as is necessary; if you can manage to simply shorten it, then it not permissible for you to shave it off, and so on. Undoubtedly if a person fears Allaah and keeps his duty to Him as much as he can, Allaah will suffice him and grant him a way out, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And whosoever fears Allaah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty).

    3. And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine”

    [al-Talaaq 65:2-3]

I sincerely hope you keep a beard, and distinguish yourself as a Muslim.

I wish you negate the stereotypical representation of muslims in your place of residence and spread the real message of truth and peace i.e. Islam, the ONLY way of living ones life.

Do remember all muslim brothers adn sisters in your prayers ,

May Allah guide us all to the rightful path i.e. Islam.

    Ameen.

What is your opinion? http://www.islamqa.com/en/ref/1169/beard Recommended length of the beard: http://www.islamqa.com/en/ref/6657/beard

I'm 20 also, and I used to wear an earing, keep a "thin line" beard, wear the best thug like clothes etc etc. Had no time for Islam in those days, but they were also the days when I had most real life problems, which at the time I never thought existed, and I only can find out, by reflecting on my previous doings today.

As goes for shaving the head Nabi SAW only shaved his hair off at end of hajj, and he would let it grow after that. As far as I know, don't step cut your hair if you choose this image path, try to keep it near enough one length at least.

I also thought that if I keep a beard I will look extremely older.. and many times I tried keeping it and then would remove it, now though I have kept it properly and will never remove it.

I am taunted by my dad and even my mum, however I also get my fair share of encouragement from others. My mother argues I look dirty. My father argues because I am not a perfect muslim yet I shouldn't have the beard and that I am the type of muslim that gives the "knowledge" ones a bad name. Both these I refute, the beard makes me look muslim, and I love knowing that I look like a muslim. It helps me remembering who I am on a daily basis. Everytime I touch my beard, I remember, Allah. Every time I look in the mirror I remember Allah, and that is enough to sustain my own intentions for keeping it.

The general society around me is better than before. I am more likely to be given salaam by others, and I am more likely for them to not just say it, but for them to come up to me and extend there hand and say salaam.

As goes for "oppurtunities", this depends on your faith, not your beard, Many times there are things that we think are bad for us, when in fact it would be better for us, and who is the provider? Allah swt. If you have faith in that surely you won't fail, and if you are tested with increased poverty remember it may be good for you.

I come from a family that were, extremely wealthy, to put it in perspective, I could say I want this, and I'd have it when I was growing up. Life looked so simple, and my parents considered money making simple and still do, these were the times when no one in my home would follow Islam, I mean, no one ever read Salah, no one lifted a Quran for 15 years and so on, I was not taught Islam as a kid, but I was atleast taught to not drink alcohol, eat pig etc and I did naturally abide as those kinds of things was the only thing my parents ever required of me. Anyway the point im making is, we were what I would consider, rich, and literally instantly my fathers life was on the line, he survived, but then his wealth literally dissapeared, from him without him realising it was going within 3 years of that.

Alhamdulilah, 6 years later, there is much more Islamic behaviour going on in our household, and wealth is increasing once again naturally, something which we thought realistically wouldn't happen again. The point is the wealth went in a way in which we thought impossible, and the wealth reappeared in a way in which we thought impossible. We never asked for the wealth again honestly, we were ready to live quite poorly for we had learnt a lesson. I had learnt a lesson through watching what my parents had gone from and to, and the method in which it happened. I learnt many things about life from those few years, that many people would wish to witness, for then they would understand the value of looking after what they have. This day in age, if money comes in, the first thing taken from that sum of money is Sadaqah to give to the poor of this world, in those days, it was a new coat for £2000. So my advice is IF YOU HAVE IMAAN, and this is only if you have IMAAN, because if you don't its pointless, but if you really do have IMAAN then put your faith in Allah swt to provide and grow your beard.

Your beard will remind you of your actions outside your home also, in general it makes you a better person. Once you grow it, yeah i would say don't take it off, people do, but i'd advise you not to.

WTF!? How is a bald head and a beard Islamic?

Dude, you and the ones like you should really grow up. Appearance doesn't reflect on religion.
