What Is More Enjoyable.......Taking The Picture, or Making The Print?

I thoroughly enjoy getting out and about with a camera and a few rolls of film, but I also love making the print and hanging it on the wall. Henri Cartier-Bresson never did his own developing or printing, preferring to concentrate on shooting. Do you find post processing a chore? Do you consider the act of making an exposure simply a means to an end product? Or do you love the whole process of making a image?

I actually like both aspects of photography too. I love capturing images with my camera - but - I like bringing the image to life too.

I feel really lucky to live in a time when the developing process is so much more accessible to the masses. Now that we have access to digital images and computer photo software, the expense of processing and developing photos has decreased dramatically. Otherwise, I wouldn't have the option to develop my own photos.

I would love a dark room - and have wanted one for years. But, the reality is, I don't have the space or the money for one. And up until recently it would mean that by default I'd have to let someone else develop my pictures. I'm grateful to have the option since I really like both parts of photography (actually to me, they aren't really even separate)

Recently, I've gotten into HDR photography (check out http://www.hdrphotographyblog.com/ for more info) which is a lot of processing work, but a lot of fun too. The process of taking these photos is a bit more involved, but also a good time.

I can understand someone wanting to just take the pictures. But, for me, I like both parts of it, and actually, the way I see it, taking the picture AND developing it yourself is the complete art.

''In 1937, Cartier-Bresson married a Javanese dancer, Ratna Mohini. They lived in a fourth-floor servants' flat at 19, rue Danielle Casanova, a large studio with a small bedroom, kitchen and bathroom where Cartier-Bresson developed film.''

    ....could be wrong!

Taking the picture (digital) is more enjoyable for me , as I don't have time to devote on wet-darkroom.

Interestingly with film I never did my own development. I know people who did, but for me it was definitely a chore. With digital I'm forced to photograph, post process and print. However when I use film I still send it out for development, and then scan and print it myself (Simply because I have the facilities to do so already and so it's cheaper).

It should be noted that I try to avoid post work as much as possible. I much prefer initial stages of making photographs, but even I have to admit it doesn't feel finished until you touch a print.

I like the whole thing :) The experience of taking the photo the work you put towards the photo and the ending product being a success

  • I am old school and use a darkroom. I love it. It is way more fun than simply manipulating something with a computer program.

I love both, but I'm an odd one, ask anyone here!
