How do drug users get HIV?
I was talking to a family who was telling me about how they have a girl in their daycare with HIV. I asked them if they were worried their child might inadvertaintly get infected by the child in question. They explained to me that HIV dies on contact with Oxygen, so it is a non issue. My question then is, how can intervenious drug users get aids from each other if this is the case? It must not be from the blood on the outside of the needle, but maybe their is blood inside the needle that did not come in contact with oxygen, is this possible?
This was a conversation peice at our last dinner (sad really), but now I am curious to see what others think?

You are correct in saying that once HIV is exposed to oxygen it dies very quickly--within minutes. The reason HIV can be transmitted by sharing needles for drug use is that the virus will stay alive in blood inside the needle and syringe much longer than it will stay alive in open air. (Users often draw blood into the syringe before injecting the drug.) People who share needles for drug use are at very high risk of getting HIV. Also, as others have said above, people who are in the middle of a drug addiction will often do whatever it takes to get the drug or money for the drug, including prostitution, without paying attention to the risks they are taking.
The reason that a child who has HIV poses no risk to other children in a daycare is that HIV is not transmitted by saliva or by casual contact. HIV is transmitted through unprotected sex, sharing needles for drug use, (or otherwise getting infected blood into your bloodstream through a cut or open wound), and transmission from mother to child during pregnancy. You can touch, hug, or even kiss someone who has HIV and not get it yourself.
I think it is great that this family does not feel that their child is at risk because another child in the daycare has HIV. Years ago, children who had HIV were forced out of school due to fear that other children could catch the virus from them. (The most famous case of this was Ryan White, who got HIV from a blood transfusion before all donated blood was tested for HIV.)

The blood on the inside of the needle would most likely be the cause of the HIV.

it would come from the inside of the needle. and then you have the fact that the person is addicted so badly that they would go out and prostitute themselves to get more drugs and if they are doing that . they may contract it from that or they may be high so badly their judgement is impaired and they may make a bad decision and have sex with a person that's infected. there is no one set way to get this disease just be careful. and god bless those who have it.

I would say yes, inside the needle. But I always assumed most drug users got aids from sex. They are often unconcious, get raped or just don't realize what they're doing until it's too late.
