Yes they are easily backwards compatible you open them the same as any other Excel file. Sheets also go the other way but on any machine that has 2003 you will need to download an add on from microsoft before it can read the 2007 files.

Yes you can.
Just remember that its harder to open excel 2007 documents in Excel 2003. You will need to use the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack in order to open .xlsx files

It surely is possible to open any excel from 97 in ms excel 2007. I think, you can even open many open source excels too.

Yes, with no problems. The problems are the other way around - 2003 can't open 2007 files.

I certainly hope Microsoft made their software backwards compatible by two generations! (2 or so, I don't know exactly I don't use that ****). If not, just more evidence that people should switch to Linux and open source!.
Anyways, yes I would definitely think an '03 excel file would load into '07, nto the other way around though.
