when I put my Bmw e39 Auto / Triptonic in reverse the car struggles to reverse. what could this be.?

your reverse gear is sitting in the bottom of the pan, lol. get a new gasket for the pan and drop the pan. reach up in there and put the gear back where it belongs, replace the gasket and bolt it back in place.
Make sure to drain the fluid first and then to refill the fluid when your done.
