Copyright Laws pertaining to Video Games and Music?

I know copying and reselling video games and music is illegal, but aside from that what are the specific laws pertaining to the reproduction of these? I've heard that you can keep a backup copy of them if you own it, but can you copy and give away for free? It seems to me like it would be illegal, but I have yet to get a confirmation, seeing as how everyone says "It's not illegal, everyone does it.". I need specific rules and laws. All my searches have come up kinda sketchy, so help would be appreciated.

In general it is illegal to copy or distribute any copyrighted work without permission from the copyright holder. There are some exceptions under fair use, but those definitely do not encompass giving away copies of items for free. Fair use is a vague system of 4 factors, not a definitive list of particular activities. The legality of making personal backup copies has not been definitively decided, but most copyright lawyers think that it is a legal fair use.

This involves reading the End User Licence Agreement, which nobody ever does.

You are generally allowed to make one backup copy for personal use. You are not permitted to copy the game to sell, lend or give away.
