I have 20+ years of experience in the electronics field and own or have owned many including several Dell, HP, Compaq, IBM and Toshiba! I can tell you to stay away from HP and Compaq because they have the worst customer satisfaction ratings! I can vouch for Toshiba Satellites with the second best customer satisfaction ratings; but, my next laptop will be an Asus G50VT-X5 which has the best or highest customer satisfaction and lowest number of breakdowns per capita!
And, sell for $499 to $699 on average! So, in summary... why not buy the best model with the happiest most satisfied customers for around $600???

I've had about 5 years + experience with laptops, I'd NEVER purchase a HP or a Dell. Sony Vaio are a great computer but getting kind of dated. The Toshiba Satellite is a very reliable and functional computer, and I can vouch for their build quality and reliability.

Sony Vaio = Good Brand Not worth Price
Toshiba = Good Brand Not worth Price
Hp = Crap full of bloatware
I recommend a Sager NP9280
Has a REAL i7 not those fake i7qm that sony/toshiba have been pawning off to people who don't know the difference.
Will blow just about any laptop on planet out of water minus two others ^_^. (Alienware and Asuses newest gaming rig but they are all THREE using the same Clevo Motherboard)

I think Compaq is the best brand. That is what I have.
