How can I improve my painting skills?
When painting, I have trouble cultivating and co-ordinating colours, sketching my idea out first is no problem, but I cannot for my dear life, paint, the colours don't blend together and look like patches and I don't have a steady hand at brush strokes, any ideas? It's important, the main focus on my GCSE art project is painting !
I've practiced for at least 5 years since doing courses in art - still no good, I can't seem to focus when painting. And I've tried classes, and have three professional painters for art tutors, still no luck, i try all the time, still no good !

Instructions
1.
Step 1
Read magazines and books on murals and painting. Subscribe to artists magazines and purchase or borrow books on painting. You can use these materials to teach yourself new techniques and to discover new ways of working.
2.
Step 2
Expose your self to the work of other muralists. It is easy for an artist to isolate themselves and work in a bubble. You need to view the work of other mural artists. The purpose of this is not to copy what other artists are doing, but to be inspired by other artists. Such inspiration will only improve your own talent and skills.
3.
Step 3
Take art classes. You are never too good of an artist to take art classes. Even a beginner artist class can be helpful to a seasoned pro as it can remind you of some techniques and skills that you had long forgotten. You may also want to take classes on things like faux painting, tromp l’oeil, painting, and stenciling as this will improve the range of your skills.
4.
Step 4
Practice often. Mural painting will improve with each mural (or even smaller painting) that you paint. Therefore, in order to improve your mural painting skills you should make it a point to paint regularly. Don’t just wait until you want a new mural in your home, or until someone asks you to paint for them.
5.
Step 5
Stay abreast of new materials and tools. Learn how to use a projector to help you transfer drawings onto a wall, learn how to draw sketches in proper perspective and scale, find out about new paints and rollers and brushes that may make your job easier as soon as they come on the market.

Practice practice and more practice!
Restrict your palette to a few colors. When you start a painting, use only one blue, one red and one yellow. Mix your colors to make the secondaries. Keep this tip and it will help you make your paintings harmonize. A good way to practice your painting skills is with monochrome paintings. That takes color out of the process and you can refine your techniques. My medium is watercolor and I have 5 blues on my palette but I never use more than a single blue in a painting. The same with the other primaries. The fewer colors you use the better.

blend on palette first. try using turpentine, paint thinner, or mineral spirits. also, the answer depends on if you are painting realism (takes days or more, many thin layers) or impressionist (thick, all in one sitting). if you are doing realism i suggest the mineral spirits and paint thinners. if you are doing impressionist dont try to blend on the canvas. make thick stokes.
