How do I hook up two computers to play games together?

We have a laptop which runs Vista and a pc that runs XP. We cant connect thru the internet as it's too slow. We have a router but it's broken!! Is there another way we can hook the two computers up together so we can play games against each other??

Update:

But once I connect them...then what do I need to do? Will they automatically recognise each other?

Update 2:

So basically you're saying its not possible because there is no way to put xp on my laptop.

properly, truly you are able to desire to purchase a cable, besides the undeniable fact that there are a number of on the spot techniques now, then when you conect the two computers, do no longer difficulty, your laptop has in ordinary terms one jack which will restoration with the inlet of this cable. then bypass on domicile windows Xp the place it says "Create a small lan or bussness", folow the learning, truly only permit the flaws as prederterninated, on the tip say no to create a diskette. Repeat the technique in the different laptop, restart and this could be all.

Use an Ethernet cable and connect the two computers up directly to each other.

the vista is not going to allow you to connect with XP so first change it to XP .......then only you can get yourself connected to Desktop which is already on XP with a LAN Cable without any problem.
