no sound on our computer.HELP!?

we had to restart our computer right from scratch now the sound isn't working, it has a sound card in it because it was working before the restart. We were told to google asus support and we did all we were told, and downloaded what he told us but we still cant get it to work, if we go into media player it says--Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

If we go into control panel and click Sounds and Audio Devices is says there are none, does anyone know what to do?

Update:

u idiot, they r on!!!!!!!!!

Now as for the sound. I'd like for you to right click on My Computer and click on manage. And then click on Device Manager. If you have any yellow question marks chances are that's your problem. It should be pretty easy to tell which one the sound is but if you can't tell the difference just right click all of them once at a time and click on Update Driver. Then follow the steps and you should be on your way to having sound. If something doesn't really make sense to you just hit next it's usually automatically set to what you want.

Now if in Device Manager you see any Red X's then right click them and try clicking Enable chances are that will fix your problem otherwise do the exact same process.

Good Luck and let me know if you got it working.

To play sound a PC needs a sound card. Just like to show graphics a PC needs a graphics card.

A driver is a special program that allows the operating system to communicate with the hardware. Thus if the driver is corrupted or missing the operating system (Windows in your case) cannot communicate with the sound card. As for how to install it...

Before you try reinstalling the drivers, do the following: click Start, right click on My Computer, choose Properties, click on the Hardware tab and click on the Device Manager button there. The Device Manager window should open and there probably are some entries in the list which have a question mark as their icon or an exclamation sign as part of their icon. See anything like that?

Was this restart due to a virus, the problem is that your computer thinks it has no sound card, A virus could have messed up the driver. Try to restart your computer again and see if it works then.

First make sure that you are installing correct drivers for your sound card, go to following link and download unknown device identifier, when this software will identify your device, then google that device,
