No, peanut butter works on dogs, not horses.

They had a wire running down from the bridle (remember he always wore that) across his teeth under his lips, and up the other side. When they pulled on the wire it irritated him and he raised and lowered his lips.

This was back in the 1960's, animal cruelty wasn't followed up on unless the animal was severely injured or died. Now we have the humane society sending representatives to each and every tv show and movie that has animal actors appearing on set. they couldn't get away with that now. So it's done digitally since that looks so much better today.
