Can you freeze cheese?

I was wondering if a block of chedder or marble cheese would be altered in anyway by freezing. Just wondering for the sake of saving a few dollars by buying a bigger block initially. I don't want it to taste odd after or become crumbly. Thanks for your help!

    The basic rule is that the harder the cheese, the better candidate it is for freezing. The softer the cheese the more likely you will be unhappy with the thawed cheese.

    If your cheddar is extra sharp/hard, wrap it in foil, then drop it in a freezer bag, removing as much air as possible. You can keep it in the freezer for up to 8 months, up to 6 if you have a frost free freezer.

    The taste will be fine but the texture will be ruined. It won't be suitable for slicing when thawed but it will be fine for recipes that call for shredded cheese. There's not much reason to freeze cheese though unless you are going on vacation or something. Cheese stores well in the refrigerator for quite a while and with firm cheeses like cheddar even if it gets a little moldy you can cut off that part and still use the rest of the cheese.

    Cheddar Cheese is good for freezing !! !!

    Either freeze fresh, soft cheeses, such as mozzarella and goat cheese, in their original packaging, or wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and put that in a zipper-type storage bag before tossing it in the freezer.

    they should be eaten within about two months, and should be thawed in the refrigerator.

    Ricotta cheese cannot be frozen very successfully.

    Soft-ripened cheeses, such as Brie and Camembert, should not be frozen "unless absolutely necessary,"

    Semi-soft cheeses, like Monterrey Jack, Munster, Havarti, and Gorgonzola, tend to become crumbly after freezing.

    And hard aged cheeses, such as Cheddar, Colby, Gruyère, Asiago, and Manchego, will simply benefit from continuing their aging process in your refrigerator.

    If you you want to cut it into nice pieces afterward, do not freeze it. Cheddar turns into cheese crumbles when you cut it after freezing, but If you only intend to use it to melt, or you don't mind cheese crumbles, go for it!

    Freezing & thawing cheese will make it grainy; the curds separate.

    Just keep it in the fridge; but cut into sections & wrap for safety.

    I freeze cheddar cheese and it comes out fine!
