    C is the answer.

    a) telling the difference between oneself and others

-This doesn't happen until we have words to describe the differences with. Just consider how babies play together compared to how 5 or 6 year olds play together. Babies tend not to yet know the difference between them and others, and they play with whomever is nice to them. 5 or 6 year olds, in contrast, tend to segregate into groups of gender and interest.

    b) Knowing one's name

-Knowing one's name takes a knowledge of language, and it is not a step in the acquisition of self. You can train a dog to respond to its name, but dogs are not considered to have a sense of self.

    d) seeing patterns in people's responses to us

-This is a better answer than A or B, but cognitizing these patterns requires the use of language to understand them.
