Is there a difference between ice skating and ice dancing (with partners)?

Someone told me there's a difference between ice skating and ice dancing... or is there no difference at all, are they the same thing?? She said that in ice dancing they do not do tricks, but I've seen them do tricks before.

Thanks in advance!!!

There is a difference between singles/pairs skating and ice dancing, but all are considered a part of the overall sport of figure skating.

In singles figure skating, men and women compete in separate divisions individually. The focus of singles figure skating is the ability to jump and spin, though other things, like spirals and footwork, are also judged and evaluated, as are all the steps that connect different elements in the program. The primary emphasis, however, is the difficulty and ability of the skater to perform jumps and spins accurately and without error (i.e. falling, etc.). These skaters do a short program with required elements, and a long program that allows the skater to perform elements that best showcase their abilities.

In pairs figure skating, teams of one man and one woman compete as a couple. While they still perform the jumps and spins that are the primary focus of singles skating, they perform these elements in unison (i.e. jumping/spinning at the same time side by side) or will partner the spins. Pairs skating also includes overhead lifts, death spirals, and throw jumps. Again, connecting elements and footwork are judged like singles skating, but the primary emphasis is the difficulty and ability to perform the jumps, spins, lifts, and death spirals. Pairs skaters also do a short and long program similar to singles skaters.

Ice dancing, like pairs skating, is made up of a male and female team competing together, but the difference is in the emphasis of the judging. Ice dancing is judged much more heavily on footwork, and contains no jumps. However, ice dancers do spins and lifts as well, but the lifts are governed under very strict rules to prevent overhead lifts like the pairs skaters perform, which is challenging for creativity and difficulty within the lift positions. In ice dancing, the connecting steps between elements are also given a particular emphasis, and it is often difficult for a casual spectator to tell the difference between the required footwork sequences and the connecting steps. Ice dancing also has more requirements for the music being skated to, in that it must have a constant beat that is skated to, and deductions are taken for skating primarily to the melody of the music, which makes it different than singles or pairs skating as well. Ice dancers compete a compulsory dance (where all the teams competing skate the same steps to the same music), an original dance (where the musical style is pre-determined, but the skaters determine their own steps), and a free dance (where the dancers pick both their musical style and their steps).

Try not to think of it as "tricks/no tricks", but as different types of skills being performed by each discipline. Singles skaters jump and spin. Pairs skaters jump, spin, and do lifts. Ice dancers do complex footwork, lifts and spins. Each discipline of skating has its own difficulty to it, and ice dance is quite challenging even though it doesn't rely on the ability to jump in the air! :)

    Hope this helps!

The sport of ice (figure) skating includes single skating, pairs, and ice dancing.

In singles - there are the men's and ladies' events where each person skates a freestyle program that includes tricks - jumps, spins, footwork etc.. In pairs, a guy and a lady skate together and do tricks that the single skaters do and also tricks that are exclusive to pair skating such as lifts and pair spins. In ice dancing, again, a man and a lady skate together but there are no big jumps like you see in singles and pairs. There are small lifts, twizzles, and a whole lot of other kinds of footwork and mini spins. There is more expression to the music than you would see in pairs.

    Does that help?

yes, a big difference, first off, you have figure skating which is done by singles, men and women have their own division, they do all the jumps and spins by themselves, then there is pairs, where a man and woman skate together, these are the ones that do lifts above the head, and the throw jumps, ice dancing is when a man and a woman skate together, they don't jump, they don't spin, the do lifts but not over the head, and they perform a variety of footwork sequences. there is a big difference. so there are singles, pairs and ice dance, thats how you can remember it! all parts of skating are fun to watch though, ice dancers do do tricks, just no jumps or spins, but they do some lifts and footwork

Ice dancing is where you dress up, Figure skating is where you dance on ice without dressing up in weird costumes
