89 chevy truck wont shift out of first gear (100,000 miles)?

my 89 chevy truck wont shift out of 1st gear, I baught it from an old man and he he kept it up very well and it was hardly drivin. could the transmission be bad with only 100,000 miles??? someone said it could be the govener...

truck was sitting in garage for 3 years before i baught it but it was cranked daily

    I am sure you checked the fluid,check the vacum line going down to the modulator valve if it has one, if it doesn't have the mod valve on it then it has a kick down cable coming from the transmission up to the carburetor , have those checked out and if that isn't it change the fluid and filter and clean the gov.

    it might have a brake swap fuse. i understand my Ford has it(ninety 4 T-chicken), and if that fuse is blown it wont permit me get out of park, yet i don't understand if Chevy makes use of something like that. Or the Transmission selection sensor would desire to be undesirable. it extremely is the sensor on the transmission that places the vehicle in kit. you could pass it yet then whenever you prefer to get swap between gears you will desire to get out and manually swap it.

    if it has a vacuum modulator on the transmission then it could be bad. i had to change 1 on a buick once because it would,nt change gears.
