Infant straining for BM. . .been going on for weeks?
My daughter is 7 weeks, and for the past month she strains to have a BM. I breastfeed her, and while I know many will say that she doesn't need to have a BM every day, she tries to have one, strains, cries, turns bright red in the face, etc. I've been helping her by using a suppository to stick part of the way in (I don't put it all the way in because she's not constipated with dry, clayish poop). That seems to relax her enough that she'll go right away. Once she goes she's a happy little girl for the next 24 hours until she needs to go again. Is it unsafe for me to be helping her go every day, and what can I do to help her go on her own. Juices, karo syrup, those don't work because it's not constipation.
Thanks!

Pediatrician told us to buy some Little Tummies laxative...only comes in chocolate flavor. Put one half to a full dropper in one bottle (in the morning) and it really works like a charm.

You have the right to worry - if she's struggling for days on end, that's constipation. And, yes, she should be doing a daily do, as at any age. Juices and karo syrup may help, but so far as I know the only juices you can give her at that age are pear and prune - in small, medicinal doses, and diluted of course.
What you're doing now with the suppository is quite harmless - and quite laudable really. there's no danger of her becoming physically dependent on it, even if it does take weeks for her to start making the effort. If it's the only way to make sure she's doing a smelly every day, keep using it - but don't forget the "feeding" part!

I don't think you should use a suppository everyday, that can lead to a whole slew of other issues. I would mention it to your peditrician soon. I do know that around the 8 weeks of age mark babies bowels go through some changes, which can make them grunt and strain like the need to poop, but they don't really HAVE to go. Especially since you're breastfeeding her, almost everything is absorbed, so there isn't a whole lot to pass. I've had 3 children, breastfed all of them and I'm still breastfeeding my 7 month old. Don't use juice, karo, or anything else until you get the okay from her doctor. Good luck and I'm sure she'll be fine! :)

Is she actually constipated? Are her BM's hard? Around that age babies start learning the cause/effect of BMs & make a bigger production out of it than needed. I know b/c my son did the same thing & I asked the doctor who told me it's just natural & will do it constipated or not. But later on when he was actually constipated, then I used kayro syrup (as directed by the dr).

She is learning how, by you doing it for her she is not learning. She may have a hard time for a few times but she will figure it out if you leave it to her.
