Why are Toyota owners not told to put their cars into Neutral if it accelerates unintentionally?

Everyone talks about pushing the brakes or turning off the key, anything but putting the car into Neutral, which will disengage the engine from the drive wheels and make the car just coast. The advantage of this is you will maintain power brakes and power steering until you can come to a stop.

Update:

Apparently, the runaway Prius in SoCal, the driver refused to put the car into neutral, saying it might cause him to flip??? There's something fishy about this whole story.

Because sometimes its not possible for a car to shift into neutral that easily....it has to do with the electronic transmission. Sometimes at that high speeds, the tranny will not engage even if you are doing 90 mph. Same thing with the Lexus. (this is not including the IS ES or LS) (mainly hybrids would have problems such as this one.)

I am assuming that his gas pedal might have worn out, the dealer could be (I think will be) at fault here for not thoroughly inspecting it. If he had a Camry (not the hybrid) or Avalon, he could have easily shifted into neutral and then stopped.

It might NOT be that simple.

I've heard that with some new cars, the shift lever is not mechanically linked to the transmission. It's electronic. If the engine is at wide open throttle, over a certain RPM, the computer will NOT allow you to shift into neutral. You could put the shift lever to neutral, but the transmission will still be in gear.

I don't know for sure if this is true...but I have heard and read it from several different sources, including auto repair forums.

I just wish someone with experience would answer my question clearly whether or not this is true.

I mean, honestly, it really seems like there must be something else going on. Does anyone REALLY believe that all the people in these accidents didn't think to shift into neutral? What about the CHP officer who was killed in the first accident? Do you REALLY think that a cop wouldn't have known to shift the car into neutral? Give me a break! Of course he thought of that!

That's why I'm starting to believe there might be some kind of electronic lockout which prevents the transmission being shifted to neutral if the engine is above a certain speed.

By the way, for the guy above me who said he "tested" his car by shifting it into neutral...popping it into neutral while coasting down a street with the engine at 1500 - 2000 RPM or whatever is NOT the same as trying to shift into neutral with the engine at full throttle. So there might STILL be some kind of electronic lockout which prevents the car from being shifted into neutral...but you wouldn't know about it until you get into that situation.

I'm just saying people need to stop being sarcastic and trying to simplify this.

The previous answers about the car not going into neutrel may be correct, I'm not sure. However, people aren't very smart when it comes to cars. I was talking to my girlfriend the other day and asked her what she would do if her gas pedal stuck to the floor. The first thing she said was go off the road and try to hit something to get stopped. She's 27, been driving for 11 years. And that was the best idea she could come up with.

My guess is Toyota's scared the driver will accidentally shift the car into reverse instead of neutral. Even if a driver were to do this, the car should have a reverse override that prevents the transmission from shifting into reverse while the car is moving forward. Maybe there's something about the shifter that Toyota isn't telling the public. It's already pretty clear they're lying about the accelerator.

I've tested my recalled 2007 Camry and it pops into neutral just fine while moving forward.

a million) it fairly is illegitimate in maximum states 2) It takes some administration removed from the vehicle, surprisingly once you're on a floor that's no longer dry 3) it fairly is available to forget approximately you're in nuetral and the two slide it into park or race the engine questioning you're in stress 4) the engine braking effect actual helps you shield administration and have much less positioned on and tear on the brakes 5) you haven't any longer any administration over the vehicle in an emergency 6) the vehicle continues to be turning over at idle, and coming down the hill consisting of your transmission engaged, the vehicle continues to be in idle - you're no longer saving as much as you think of seven) the rear seal of the transmission isn't being right lubricated once you're in idle and the stress shaft is engaged. it fairly is fairly one among the justifications a rear wheel stress motor vehicle should not be towed great distances. All in all, your pal is actual. in simple terms permit the engine idle as you come back to a site visitors administration gadget that calls so you might offer up.

and your right and turning of key will shut off motor shifting into Neutral

and there is also a E brake they dont teach how to handle problems they just teach how to stay between the lines

really it just depends on where your at when it happens but Neutral key off E brake wil or should stop it

but its that first few seconds of shock and then not knowing how to handle it which is the problem

the shock of speed they dont know how to handle

might even be able to lift it with toe im not sure

ive had it happen twice if not a few times driving 40 yrs

i just shift out of gear and steer turn the car off sounds easy to handle but people dont know how to handle it they know how to pump fuel how to crank how to use blinker

dont know what to do with a blow out or brake failing or a stickey gas peddle

brake failing sucks more drove thru a shop back wall once

    had gas stick on a 64 mustang ford ltd and a 65 buick and a 70 72 75 87 Pontiac

nothing new i stop most every time by turning off key crash once

actually they are advised to do just that but quite a few are locked out of that neutral feature while in motion. several of the new cars will not allow neutral drops or pop into neutral while moving. some silly safety feature.
