What is 4H and how should i start?
I am thirteen and i have two sisters (11 and 14). We live with our dad but we visit our mom every other day in north minnesota. She suggested that we start 4H because we don't have any pets other than fish and since she lives on a farm anyway, we have all the room we need. I am just not very familiar with 4H and what is it exactly and how can we start? Do we sign up or something? I don't really get it but i do want to raise animals with my sisters.

4-H is a program where you take care of an animal and learn about that animal. There are many different projects varying form beef cows, horses, dogs, rabbits, sheep, goats, wood working and other non animal projects.
You need to join a 4-H club to get started. Depending on where you live, the 4-H years starts are different times, some start in Aug/Sept while others start in January. If your local clubs start in the fall, it is too late to join for this year, but you might be able to still join if the clubs start in January.
Each club offers different projects. If you have a specific one in mind, try to find a club that offers that project. If you don't have a preference, then join a club that offers a project you might be interested in or is near you. You can contact a club now so you can prepare what you need for when you actually join. You might even be able to attend some meetings to see if you like it.
Once you have decided on a project and found a club, you need to get the animal.Your 4-H leader should be able to help you find a suitable animal. It is best to get a purebred, pedigreed animal from someone who raises them and knows about that species.
You should keep in mind that with many of the livestock projects, you sell your project animal at the end of the 4-H year. You might not have to, but it is the general goal for some of the projects.

4-H is a club you join....you can take different projects such as: Horses, Pigs, cows, Sewing, Cooking...etc
You get together usually weekly(or when possible)and learn about the project at hand. At the end of the season you get to display your projects at the county Fair! Horse 4-H usually has horse shows, clinics..etc Market animals(cows, pigs, sheep) are sold at auction during the Fair. I was in 4-H growing up, close to 10 years, It is awesome...you will learn so much and make great friends!
Call your local Extension Office....they handle Agricultural things for your county....they usually handle 4-H as well.--I found you this website: http://www1.extension.umn.edu/youth/mn4-H/
