I have a friend who was in this situation. They stayed together for two years as I recall and she couldn't take it anymore apparently and cheated on him.
So to answer the question, The relationship will last if they don't go away to college forever. Plan on coming back or being able to visit often. Otherwise get married, there is no other option if you really want to stay together.

My boyfriend and I are about to hit the same situation soon too. First of all, don't choose your college according to where he/she wants to go. If you ever break up (even if you're madly in love right now) you might end up regretting that decision one day down the road. You COULD stay together and visit each other, but if the colleges you two choose are far away, then it is going to be really hard. The break up solution is the one tons of couples don't want to hear, but i guess we all have to consider it, because sometimes it may be in the best interest if all the odds aren't in your favor. I understand your tough dilemma, but I honestly don't know what to tell you to do...i'm not you and your bf/gf. Ideally you would both go to the same college that you both REALLY want to go to and is your #1 choice, but I'm guessing that isn't the case here? I can only suggest talking it out with him/her and coming to a conclusion together about what you two are both comfortable with.
