I am having problems with my IDE/Hard drive/cd drive running.?

I recently disassembled my computer to clean it out and I placed everything back in but now I can't get either my CD-drive or my hard drive to boot. I have looked on other forums but none have helped. I have two motherboard connections and have tried alternating the slave/master with the cd rom and the hard drive, I have also tried separate connections with no luck. Both work when no IDE cables are plugged in so I know it is not a failure/electrical issue. I am probably missing something very obvious but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Update:

I have tried separate connections on the mother board and have even set them as both slave/ both master/ and alternating but they still don't seem to work and as for the pin in slot 40 it is not because the tops of the ide cable have a slot that inserts only one way into each device and to the motherboard

Hmm, about the only thing I can think of to try is perhaps you have the IDE connectors that are NOT keyed and you have the ribbon cable socket "flipped over"....... Whcih would mean you have pin 1 on the ribbon cable connected to pin 40 of the drives.

Plug them into separate IDE connectors on the motherboard.

there are various updates , yet no longer that many. My computing gadget had a foul malicious application and Norton did no longer discover it. I have been given a loose application referred to as undercover agent ware terminator ( additionally has an antivirus) and it got here across eleven products, so Norton SUCKS, attempt getting something else. ( AVG loose, etc,)
