When and how did you first start learning about motorcycles?

I was wondering how you got into riding and or working on motorcycles, what got you into it all and what really helped you learn?

My daily commute to a state prison evolved from city bus to Yamaha.

Because the small machine and my riding attire was bright yellow

the nickname I obtained was The Canary. I'd sing using 30-06 lever-

action Winchester and saying hello to my little friend. What got me

into motorcycles was a four year university degree in corrections.

Now that I'm a senior citizen my ride of choice is the DR650SE.

When I was in high school, my best friend bought an old 50cc dual-purpose bike for around $50. It was too beat up to ever be certified, so he bought it just to use at his cottage. During the winter, we took it out on neighborhood streets after heavy snowfalls, because we knew that there would be no police cruisers around until the streets had been plowed. We fell a lot, but didn't get hurt, because we would just slide in the snow. It was a great way to learn to use smooth throttle and braking, and make the most of available traction!

The next year, I bought a 60cc two stroke streetbike for $65 and fixed it up. It broke down a lot and was often hard to start, but the freedom it gave me was wonderful, because we had no car in the family.

My dad never rode a bike that i know of but he did like them and when i was a kid of nine he bought me a moped to ride around in the country .. I was 8 years old back then and had a mini bike before then when i was six .. If i wanted to ride i had to maintain my own bike . he would buy parts but would not work on it and if it broke which it did it would sit until i could fix it .. Oh by the way i am 59 now and still riding

About four years ago, I wanted something to scare the hell out of my mom, my moms a nurse practitioner. I chose to get a Harley and I hung out with a buddy of mine who owns a custom shop near my home and watched him work on bikes. Then my mom received her motorcycle license and rode a little putter motorcycle. My mom needed repairs done on her bike so my friend taught me the basics of working on motorcycles to help us save money. I love riding and nothing beats the rush of it.

Remember to wear a DOT approved helmet, if needed it will save your life.
