Floods in Riverdale Park, MD?
I'm interested in the area about a block from Anacostia River park that is labeled a flood hazard area according to insurance rates. I can't find a history of flooding there except in 1953 & 1954. Does anyone know if it floods there? How often? How much?

I don't live all that close to the river, but I have lived here for more than 15 years, and there haven't been any widespread floods during that time (sometimes a storm drain will back up and a few houses will get soaked, but I think that happens everywhere). The Anacostia was straightened and dredged by the Army Corps of Engineers after the floods in the 50s, and it's stayed in its channel during every storm that I've seen (including hurricane Isabel). That being said, my house is just outside the 100-year flood plain (which means it's in the 101 year flood plain :-)) and I do pay for flood insurance to be safe.
Riverdale Park is a great town to live in, but we are located near the river. Good luck with your decision!
