You can easily combine the two. Have the hostage situation be the sub-plot.

I think a hostage situation in a school would be much more intense/dramatic.
Save the teacher-pupil relationship for erotic literature sites.

The second one because it reminds me of a dream I had.
This guy was obsessed with me in a sexual way and he'd tried to kill me when I was younger but failed,. He was arrested (or something, I don't know, there was an absence) but then he came back for me one day at school.
I knew he had taken my class hostage because of me but he didn't say anything to me.
I didn't want him to rape me so I ran out of the door when his back was turned and I got out of a window.
I remember climbing across a bit of the outside of the building and then he realized I was gone and screamed "WHERE'S ALICE?!?!!!!!!!!!!" and then a cop told me to jump so I paniced and let go and landed in a skip.
Me and the cop walked casually away from the school, (for some retarded, dreamy reason), then the guy let the bomb go off and killed all of my class-mates.
It made me feel bad when I woke up because I could have saved my classmates, somehow, I guess. Like if I bargained with him or something knowing that I was what he wanted.
I told you this so that maybe you could use some of it in your story, appreciate being in my head.

Teacher student relationship. It's intriguing and more realistic ;)
