Question On Canon EOS xTi + Lens ... pls help?
I just bought a Canon EOS xti and I really have no clue how to use the best features of the camera. Im an inspiring photographer and would love any tips, help or sites that could help.
Beyond that ... I want to buy and lens that is good for portraits and captures color wonderfully ... vibrant without having to edit the colors!
I dont have tons of money so pls any help will be thankful!
I have played with all the features on the camera ... I just have not profected them yet. I shot lighting, football games, rain, waterfalls, my 1 year old, sunset, sunrise ... and tons more. I was simply asking the question if there was a lens for portraits that is "the best". I've has the camera for about 4 months. I have a 7 year old and a 1 year old, two full time jobs ... Photogrpahy is a hobby right now so please dont redicule me for not doing what you think should be my best. ... It was a simple quesiton.

The "normal" lens should be the Canon 18 - 55mm. I would recommend buying the camera with this lens. It keeps your original investment down and gives you a picture taking package of extremely high quality when used properly. The 18 - 55 mm lens give you a zoom range from moderate wide angle to a bit over 2x telephoto which sounds to me like it would come close to taking most of the photo types you want to shoot. The 75 - 300mm lens is a great picture taker (I am one who has one and loves it), but on your camera would give you the equivalent of approximately 3X to 13X magnification. In other words, no wide angle end at all and a magnification range that world require you to use a tripod for all the pictures you took using it. Don't confuse lenses to work like they would on a 35mm film camera. The XTi is more like a !/2 frame 35mm camera so any lens you get will be 1.5+ times more magnification than it would be using regular 35mm. Start with the basic "kit" lens and add another lens later if you have a specific need to fill.

Hey,
I recommend you to read a few tutorials, here is a good site that has plenty of tutorials for beginners: http://the-digital-photographer.blogspot.com/2009/...
There are also tips, like how to photograph sunsets, water drops, reviews for lenses etc.
If you want a portrait lens, you should buy a 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 or 85mm f/1.8. I don't know your budget so it's hard to say. The 50mm f/1.4 costs 350$. Take a look at this link, it's about 'Buying a lens, what's important, what are all those numbers, features, and which ones to buy + Amazon links. Good luck

Youre an aspiring photographer seeking advice on which lens to buy and you have no clue how to use the best features of the camera? Use your kit lens until you learn how to use all the features of your camera and can get the most from the kit lens. Get books on photography, maybe take a class or two, research photography websites, join a photography club etc. No lens you get is worth anything if you dont know how to use your camera and know nothing about at least basic photography.
You cant be too aspiring if you havent learned to use the camera.
