What does whale taste like?

I was gonna ask why people think Japanese whaling is wrong, -- like for actual reasons/ evidence not the "ranting". But yet again, i see ANOTHER question with ignorant ranting against whaling without actual reasons/ evidence etc.., and they just prove the point of the pro-whalers.

And, with all this discussion about whaling, it's picked my interest in wondering what whale meat tastes like! LOL XDD If possible, I would like to try it in the future.

Update:

First answerer, well, for 1, you didn't answer my actual question and 2, although you are not ranting, you are incorrect in this day and age regarding whales.

Yes, in the past many whale species have been hunted to an extreme amount, but today, there are many protections. As required by the IWC, there is a max. # of whales allowed to be culled and Japan does not exceed that. Plus, the specific whale in question, the Minke Whale is far from a worrisome level. There are plentiful of them.

I am fully aware of the importance of species conservation, but this is not quite the case today.

It depends on the species and the cut of meat. Whale meat is also usually deep frozen for several months or even years before it enters the market, so tasting fresh whale meat is probably quite rare. Lean whale meat is probably best described as tasting most like horse, which for those who have not tasted it is like a dense and sweet beef. The serving of whale meat under Japanese quisine is varied. Served as sashimi (thin slices of raw meat) it comes with a powerful wasabe sauce made out of horseradish, which reminds the western pallete of traditional beef dinners. When I tasted whale meat, I was unaware of what it was (I assumed it was beef) - it was not an aquired taste and was very pleasant - and like most Japanese quisine, gave the impression that it was very good for you. Because of the ethical and conservation issues surrounding its consumption, however, I would not recommend it.

My mother used to hate whale meat which school gave her. It's blooooody. If you should wanna know, it's almost 40 years ago when she was in elementary school and I was born in 1988 so being told about the story of flushing whale meat in the toilet etc, to me the days Japanese people ate whale meat without being bothered by some braindead Westerners is equivalent to the days when people rushed to Osaka Expo in 1970, the beatles sang in Budokan, Mishima Yukio committed theatrical suicide at Ichigaya station, etc. They are reduced to a historic event.

If you hear any rationale behind anti-whaling, then you are already one of those braindead people! Beware!

From what I hear it's like eating horse because whale is a mammal. It's huge so every parts taste different. Even tuna has different parts that taste very different you'd wonder if you are eating same tuna. It has strong smell many people would resist it for the first time.

I've wanted to try it but I have given that up concerning cholesterol and mercury.

Source(s): I've seen the picture of meat. It looks nothin like fish meat(at least the part I've seen).

It tasted like pork to me.

If you're ever in Hakodate, Hokkaido, stop in at Lucky Piero and order the kujira-katsu burger.
