Here's an easy way, males have one long 'flight' feather on the tip of their wings and females have two.

    Source(s): Read it on a chicken/poultry website.
  • It is nearly impossible if you haven't been trained in sexing chicks at one or a few days old, or even a few weeks old; experts usually look at their vents in order to tell the males from the females--the most accurate method.

Now, at a few months old you can pretty much tell a male from a female by looking at the combs and wattles. The combs and wattles of cockerels are much brighter in color (red) and more defined. Their hackle feathers are also longer in lengths than those of young pullets.
