New York City - Can you recommend a good eating place for those on a budget?

I will be visiting New York in 2010.

To those people who have been there, I would be very grateful to learn of the places you would definitely recommend as a place to eat.

I would have a particular interest in learning of recommendations for cafés or diners or restaurants in the following areas:

Midtown West

(North of Times Square, South of Central Park and West of the Empire State Building)

Financial District

(South of Ground Zero)

Please note that I will be visiting on a budget so I would (sadly) not have much interest in the high priced establishments.

There are MANY, MANY very good inexpensive places in both areas- almost all places have boards or menu's outside so you can see what you are getting into before you even go in!

Sahara's 513 2nd ave between 28th and 29th is a great inexpensive Turkish place they have a website.

Lafayette's grill and bar at 54 franklin off Broadway close to the Financial district is always good- has entertainment alot of night- and you never know who will show up there!

The country cafe 60 wall street is a great place to grab a sandwich soup or salad to eat at the park.

Always look inside of a place you pass by and think might be good- if it is after 7 or8 there should be people sitting down eating- if not keep moving! Also China town has many authentic cheap eats- can't give you any names cause the good ones have names that I can't read ( in native languages)!

Have fun and stay away from anywhere in time square- overpriced, bad quality and even worse service!! Red lobster in Time Square isn't cheap like they are elsewhere!

Hard Rock cafe is a neat environment. Okay food for the price. Around $12-$20 per person depending on what you get. I got an awesome burger and fries and water for $12 in December.

You can search by neighborhood, kind of food, prices, or all three. You can see menus and read readers reviews. I live here and I use it all the time. Have dim sum in Chinatown (Red Egg, Dim Sun a Go Go, Jing Fong are good) and old fashioned Jewish food at Katz's Deli. John's Pizzeria (in Times Square and in the West Village) has great pizza. There is great Indian food in Jackson Heights, Queens.

Maceys food hall, huge portions which will last all day.

the Food Court in Grand Central Station, same as Maceys.

Go off around the side streets that is where the cheaper places are.

    Greenwich Village is very expensive.
