what takes more detailed photos?

i want to photograph coins up close to show details, i am wondering am i better off getting an older used 8.0 mp slr camera or a newer 10.0 mp compact.

    Get the slr. Compact cameras aren't great at taking close up (macro) shots. You usually need manual focusing. Before buying, so some research about macro photography and f-stops.

    Either, but you need a compact with macro capability or a macro lens for the DSLR.
