What kind of animals do you have or have you had as pets?

Over my lifetime I've had: Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, Snakes, an Iguana, a Gecko, a Chinchilla, Parrots, Parakeets, a Cockatoo, Cockatiels, Mice, Rats, Fish, Finches, Canaries, Guinea Pigs, Hermit Crabs, ...(Oddly enough, I've never had a Hamster! *LOL*)

We've had cats, from questionable strays to expensive flat-faced Persians. For dogs, we had two cockapoos, a cocker spaniel, a collie who looked just like Lassie, a Siberian husky, an arctic wolf hybrid (half arctic wolf, 1/4 malamute, 1/4 German shepherd), a lab/shepherd mix, and a couple we could only guess at. We had two blue and gold macaws, an african grey parrot, a cockatoo, finches, cockatiels, a yellow nape amazon (he escaped from his cage and flew away one day, never to be seen again), hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, a rabbit, iguanas (two of them escaped and were sadly eaten by the aforementioned cats), a bearded dragon, turtles, and fish. The only animal my mom absolutely outlawed were snakes. :(

However, the most memorable "pet" we ever had wasn't really a pet. We took in a baby raccoon that was part of a litter of five. My friend's dog had killed the mother, and they were raising the babies. As they got older, the five of them were too much to handle, so they found foster parents for the raccoons. We only had ours--her name was Angel--for about eight months. We lived in a wooded area with a pond, and as Angel got older, she spent more and more time outside. She'd come home every once in a while for a bite to eat, and eventually she stopped coming around. The first few months were so fun though. It was like having a pet monkey. Angel loved to sit on my shoulders, or climb trees while I watched. If I walked away, she'd clamber down and follow me like a puppy. She wrestled with our cats and chased the dogs, and often had all of us in tears from laughing so hard. Raccoons are not meant to be pets, of course, and we were lucky that she went back to the wild so easily on her own before becoming a problem. For years afterward, every time we saw a mama raccoon sneaking onto our deck with babies following behind for a nibble of cat food, we wondered if it was Angel.

We only had fish when I was very young, and I can't remember them very well. However, I do remember the event that led to my mom refusing to ever have a fish tank again. My mom babysat for a large group of kids during the day, and apparently one day someone turned the heater on the fish tank all the way up. The next morning when my mom went to feed the fish, she couldn't understand why the water was so cloudy. When she looked closer, she saw little fish skeletons (she swears this is true) floating in the water. The poor little fish had been cooked. I can't vouch for the accuracy of that story, but as I said, my mother swears up and down that every detail is true. No one ever confessed to cooking the fish, and my mom is still pretty mad about it. This would have been about 28 years ago...

Once we found a litter of puppies that had been abandoned at the side of the road. They were only a day or so old, but we bottle-fed those little guys and eventually found homes for them. We kept one, and never figured out what kind of dog she was. Sweet little dog, but she might just have been the dumbest dog on the planet.

Now, the only pet I have is a fish. It's the world's most neglected guppy. For Christmas we are getting our daughter a rabbit, and I'm sure he will be totally spoiled!

Right now I have FOUR cats, TWO dogs, TWO guinea pigs, TWO rats, TWO bearded dragons, and A fish. I would love to have birds but my mom says that is the one thing that I can never own. Lol.

  • I've had hermit crabs, ants, tarantulas, I have a dog that is 17, and I am on my second guinea pig. You haven't had a hamster yet? You don't need a hamster. My sister had one. They bite.
