I doubt you will be happy with the paint job. If you do, sand it, and use auto primer and paint. It is very expensive and you need plenty ventilation. It would be easier to put a new layer of formica over the old one. sand it and use contact adhesive. use a router with a formica bit to trim it. Formica comes in 4x8 sheets and isn't all that expensive.
