Can people text 911 in an emergency? Texting in an emergency seems logical because it is secretive, quick, and people can be traced through their cellphones. 

So do police departments have a set up to where they can receive text messages?

I don't want anyone to try to text the police or anything, I'm just wondering if that is done in some police departments.

I've heard on the news that they were either thinking about it or trying to do it. It was on the local news here in Washington though I don't know if it was something Nation wide or just in the area.
