Why did Ronald Reagan repeatedly claim that trees cause pollution?

We all acknowledge he was no Einstein, but his lack of intellectual exceptionalism can only explain so much.

Update:

For the guy asking for a source, just google "reagan trees cause pollution" This has been a topic of discussion since Reagan made the claim in the late 1970s. No reliable source disputes the fact that he made the claim. Even right wing sources acknowledge that he made this claim.

Update 2:

Check out Bob S's links. They both (believe it or not) try to back up Reagan's claim that trees cause pollution. They certainly don't try to prove that he never made the claim.

Update 3:

Ryunkin_ I'm not running for office. If I were I certainly wouldn't be trying to win votes on Y/A.

I don't remember if he said something like that or not, but I have heard Republicans claim that trees pollute. Of course, Reagan like to take horse rides on his ranch, which is free of automobiles. I wonder why he does not ride his horse on the streets of Los Angeles instead. Is it because he likes the air better at his ranch than in Los Angeles?

Research at the University of California at Berkeley, meanwhile, suggests that pollution from oak trees is destroying the pine forests of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. They have found that the oaks are producing between 40 per cent and 70 per cent of the ozone that is damaging and killing Jeffrey and ponderosa pines that are the dominant species.....

Maybe he wasn't soo stupid after all?

I'm no Ronald Reagan fan, I think he was a twisted ideologue, but make no mistake, he wasn't stupid and if ever really did say that, he had millions of Americans believing it. Apparently intellectual snobs like you have no clue why you have such a damned hard time getting your geniuses elected. The world is not filled with intellectually exceptional voters, or haven't you noticed?

To be fair, Al Gore considers our breathing--and something that plants need to thrive--to be "pollution."
