hydroponic questions?
my science homework says:
- Give one or more future uses of hydroponics
- prepare a table to compare the conditions for controlling the growth of ornamental plants and large scale production. Conditions can include temperature, humidity, light, carbon dioxide, water and minerals.
how? :(

Homework can be so non real world.
There is nothing hydroponics wise that is waiting for the future.
Ornamental plants are the least likely use for hydroponics. It is just easier and less expensive to grow them in soil. Ornamental plants are typically slow growing, and have a larger root systems, and are intended to be transplanted into soil for use. They are usually of optimal value when they are quite large, and would not have large enough roots to support their size. Plants grown in hydroponic systems usually do no survive being transplanted to soil. They live their whole short lives in the hydroponics system. Their roots are too small and are used to being constantly saturated with water and oxygen. One of the reasons for the reduction of space in a hydroponics system is since the plants always have what they need, they can have a very small root system.
Hydroponics is suitable for propagating plants from stem cuttings. The only stay in the system until they first grow roots, then they are transplanted to soil.
Growing lettuce, and propagating plants from stem cuttings is the most common legal apllications for hydroponics.
Lettuce is harvested in as little as 60 days, is intended for consumption, so it makes more sense.
With hydroponics, you need to maintain the temperature and ph of the water.
You need to control the levels of fertilizer in the water, by measure the total disolved solids.
You need to prevent bacteria, fungus and algae from growing in your system.
You need to provide grow lights to provide light for the plants.
You can provide carbon dioxide to increase growth rate.
I have grown lettuce, tomatos, and propagated stem cuttings using hydroponics.
Hydroponics is best used where, there is limited space, or a limited supply of water.
If your irrigation system fails, you have anywhere from a day to a week to fix it.
If the pump in your hydroponics sytem fails, you my have as little as an hour before all of your plants dye.
