Today, who is going to remember what St.Patrick's Day is really about?
St.Patrick's Day is not about Ireland (not that I opposed to a little pride in my Irish heritage).
St.Patrick's Day is not about drinking.
St.Patrick is not about wearing green or other gaudy Irish stereotypes.
St.Patrick's Day is about St.Patrick and other Irish missionaries (both to and from the Emerald Isle) and the propagation of the Catholic faith.
Who here remembers that?
Oh "Acid Zebra" your answer make me shake my head.
You might want to look into the history of Irish monastic orders. Particularly, you may want to read "How The Irish Saved Civilisation," which is about how missionaries went into Europe after the fall of the Western Empire, spreading literacy and other elements of civilisation.
I feel sorry for people as content to stew in their own ignorance as you are.
"Cale - Teh Lasur Kitteh," please tell me how St.Patrick "killed of pagans", being one man with no army. Please. I would *love* to hear how it was possible for one pacifist to kill off an entire war-like nation's priests. This should be good. Really.
Fail.
To "Mia," It is not intolerant to reserve St.Patrick's Day as a religious holiday for Catholics, simply because there would be no St.Patrick's Day at all were it not for the Catholic Church.
Historidcally, it has *always* been a religious holiday. It is not until more recent times that it has been secularised.

As a catholic, I agree with you...but it may not have the same meaning to others who don't share the faith.

What i could prefer people to recollect approximately me.... i desire people remember me for the questions that I requested, and the advice that I gave to others. yet interior the tip those issues bypass away. What does not is the character of the guy. i could desire that maximum could remember me for the guy who i replaced into. How i replaced right into a Godly individual. That the Lord spoke to people through me. i desire which you will remember me via those issues. i'm unhappy to be sure you leave, yet what you do is an honorable ingredient seeing the terrible situations of our residences on the instant. yet the place ever you bypass, i comprehend that God will bless you. That isn't what its about.... That may be the history behind it, but that isn't why people celebrate it.
I love these know-it-alls who come on here trying to make everyone feel ignorant, when really they completely missed the concept in the first place.

Wasn't he that guy dancing around with a pipe to attract snakes? Or isn't that a metaphor for suppression of pagan religions? St. Patrick's day to me will always be about Irish culture, shamrocks, the luck of the Irish, and green beer. People should believe what they decide for themselves but I hardly applaud proselytizing myself. Why would one unless you are Catholic and think everyone else should be? Isn't that in itself a bit intolerant?

If it was just about the religious stuff, no one would remember saint Patrick just like the million and one other obscure saints who nobody knows about.

Nope... St Patricks Day is about Drinking Baileys and Wearing shamrocks on your sleeves...
No one cares that it celebrates St Patrick who essentially killed off the pagans in Ireland...
