medical note given no work for 5 days - Leg pain mandatory inservice during this time?

I was told i cannot go to the mandatory inservice cause of my Dr. Note, and failor to get a release i would be terminated? Is this legal NYS

    a Dr.s note is advice not job protection, you and the employer are under no legal obligation to heed his advice, if you are terminated the employer has done nothing wrong
