if you study martial arts what discipline are you taking?

Update:

I train in San Chi Ryu Karate:

First the student attempts avoidance techniques (passive defense) to keep from being injured. If the attacker continued, the student moves to deflection techniques (soft defense) to redirect the attack; then if necessary and with intensity, the student applies blocking techniques (hard defense) which emphasizes powerful and direct blocks to stop the attacker in his tracks. If following the use of these defenses, the attacker still persists, then the student changes his attitude from that of defensive to offensive, and decisively strikes a quick and final blow to end the attack. This may be in the form of a kick, a punch, a wristlock or throw.

SRK takes advantage of the numerous special techniques drawn from many martial arts, but is best known for its effectiveness as a form of self defense.

It sounds like you'd be benefitted by something like Tae Kwon Do or Kickboxing (the actual fighting training, not cardio kickboxing to music). Both would build strength, flexibility, coordination and discipline. You also might give Judo a try. The chokes and armbars from Jiu-jitsu are still there, but there is more emphasis on throws and stand up work.
