I am a huge Zappa fan. Many people think of him as a funny guy, he is; but he is also an incredible guitar player....as good as the best of 'em. Shut Up n Play Yer Guitar is a 2 disc (3 vinyl) set with nothing but guitar solo. The drumming is also excellent. Hot Rats is a top shelf instrumental jazz album with only one song with Captain Beefheart on vocal (Willie the Pimp). If you are looking for 'funny guy' Zappa, I would start with We're Only In It For the Money. Apostrophe/Overnite Sensation are his most commercially successful albums (both '74). His catalog is enormous:

I haven't even heard half of his catalog.

I've been listening for several years now, and I've heard all of his recordings except for some of his live shows, and I would say Joe's Garage Is the best Zappa album ever.

Apostrophe was the first Zappa album I owned. I wore out the vinyl copy, wore out the cassette tape. Now I have the CD :)

Apostrophe and Over-nite sensation and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFIMWRXWY90 "Muffin Man"to me this is the baddest Zappa around...Adrian Belew rips too...chk it out!
Apostrophe hit top 10 in the day and over-nite sensation had the classics "Montana" etc...

Apostrophe is my personal favorite. If youre into his instrumental/Jazz stuff you should definitely get Hot Rats.

I like Joe's Garage, but Shut Up And Play Your Guitar is good too.
