Experiences with bone chips?
My mare had been performing brilliantly when one day she went unlevel at the trot. I gave her some time off as I thought it might just be a sore muscle or similar. She didn't improve so I got the vet out. After nerve blocks, x-rays etc she was diagnosed with a bone chip in the joint between the short pastern and the pedal bone. I was told this was actually an old chip (smooth edges) and it seems the most likely reason for her mild lameness is that this chip has been moved/irritated by some trauma to the area. I was told to give her 2 months off to allow the chip to try and settle as surgery for this area had a very low success rate (10-20%), then check and see how it's going. Basically I have a 50/50 chance that she'll be sound again or no longer be suitable for riding (she's a competitive show jumper/dressage horse who's not suitable for trail/pleasure unless in full work). I'm wondering if anybody has dealt with a similar issue and if their horse came sound again? Any suggestions on supplement or similar which might help? Thanks.

It is hard to give a correct prognosis without seeing a x-ray of the area ,but i have done this operation many times with relativity good results with arthroscopic surgery to eat away the chip.. You good put the horse on MSM of 1200 mgs 4 tablets crushed daily for 5 weeks then down to 3 and eventually to 1 or 2 daily this will help a lot. This helps with pain and movement get this at a drug mart store.also glucosamine sulphate and Chodroitin added is also a great combination along with MSM.

This to me sounds like ringbone. It is a degenerative joint disease affecting the lower leg - mainly the front. There are different types.
- true ringbone - involves a joint. inflamation of the joint capsule breaks down the articular cartilage. New boe may be created eventually filling the joint space, making it incapable of movement - horse will need to be put to sleep.
- false ringbone - when a joint is not involved. New bone forms on the top or lower end of the bone.
- High ringbone affects the pastern joint or bones.
- Low ringbone - affects the coffin joint, the short pastern or the pedal bones. This is what i think your horse has.
It will cause intital lameness as you have put, them she will become sound. There will be hard swelling in the pastern region untill the chip / new bone has settled.
It is caused by poor conformation - toes in or toes out, a direct blow or injury, damage to the joint capsule a torn ligament, and stress on the joints by quick sharp movements like in polo ponies.
This problem doesn't have a cure, but it is possible to work the horse with administration of a pain - killing drug like bute.
The horse should have protection during work in the form of boots for support. Remedial shoeing may improve the horses conformation problems.
I had a horse with ringbone, and he was a showjumper, but unfortunatly, he was going lame normally after 1 round of jumping in a competition, and so he was not up to the competing side of things anymore. I decided to sell him on, just as a light hacking horse as he was prone to lameness.
This might be the outcome for your mare, just using her for hacking.
Hope i have helped.

I believe Phoebe, there are cases while meds can don't extra and horses could be placed to extra leisurely activities. till the vet has some astounding thought for you, probably giving up barrel racing is the appropriate. Sorry approximately your mare. Okey dokey, properly i assume i theory you knew what a calcified knee became into----arthritis.. so as that being the case, your horse has a extreme case of arthritis you your self reported the horse has been hurting the final a million.5 yrs. Heck pass forward and barrel race, yet dont come at right here begging for solutions while needless to say you purely have one objective in concepts, something persons have your horses welfare. sturdy day...
