what is wrong when you can't download or run e-mail attachments?
I have been having trouble with downloading everything, I am using windows XP home 2000. Could it be incompatible to newer versions of word or office? Either it wont open the doc or it pops up a message ,that reads,destination server unavailable try later;
and when tried later same message, over and over again pops up.

Windows XP or Windows 2000 - they're different.
It depends on a number of factors, though. Was the file too large (then you may see a link, but the file isn't there)? Was the file chopped out because of a spam filter or virus filter? Which email program are you using?
Newer versions of Office read documents produced by older versions, older versions don't read documents produced by newer versions unless they're saved to be readable by older versions.
Don't open the document, save it. Then you'll have a file you can do something with.
