Why do so many Americans see class divisions as strictly as a matter of income as opposed to your position?

within the economic system? I've know more than a few union workers who vote Republican, love to grumble about taxes, but don't realize or don't care to acknowledge that the only reason that they are in any position to consider themselves middle class, is because of the strength of their union.

Union power and membership has slowly eroded under Republicans and DLC style Democrats. Once the unions are busted completely, "middle class" union workers will no longer be in a position to grumble about taxes as their biggest complaint or to consider themselves middle class.

I completely agree. Too many people have forgotten how much unions have actually done for the American worker. For me, as a woman, I can appreciate that unions made it possible for me to have a female restroom at work, to have recourse for sexual harassment (men too, of course), to be able to breastfeed at work if I wanted, etc. Unions are the reason American people don't work in sweatshop conditions for 18 hours a day, for no benefits, retirement plan, and only a meager salary.

Big corporations don't care about the worker. They would lay off as many of them as it takes to increase their bottom line whilst still paying themselves obsence bonuses. It was unions who stepped up and helped workers fight for back wages after companies got huge bailouts and refused to pay. Where would those people be with no union?

That's what I don't understand. Without unions, there would be a lot of minimum wage jobs.
